For the past few years, Plaatsmaken has been organizing small-scale educational projects. We do this in collaboration with Hospitality Club, an artist initiative by Mirka Farabegoli and Krista Burger.
Over the past two years, Mirka and Krista have carried out two large-scale educational projects at Plaatsmaken, working together with various local partners. One of these was a flag project, in which pupils from primary school Ibn-i Sina used different printing techniques to create designs on fabric. The children were given space for personal development, and through the act of creating something together in public space, the project fostered greater social cohesion.
These flags are now displayed by more than fifty shop owners in the Modekwartier. The project is a great example of how collaboration between multiple parties can result in something truly special. The work created by the children will continue to be visible in the neighborhood for years to come, as the flags are used by shop owners during special events in the Modekwartier. Seeing your own work out in public is disarming—not just for children, but also for adults. It shows them that what they do is taken seriously.
This collaboration is focused on building sustainable relationships within the neighborhood and with local schools. We aim to continue this form of 'engaged art practice' in the coming years. The connections we’ve already made with surrounding schools and Modekwartier shop owners will be further strengthened, and new partnerships will also be explored.
As part of our 2025–2028 program, Hospitality Club will carry out one large educational project each year. This year, an exciting new idea is in the works—one that involves the sails of our neighbors, Molen De Kroon. More information coming soon!
